What Is a Surveyor Vest? Class 2 Multi-Pocket Vests Explained

Walk onto any road job and you will see two kinds of vest. One is a thin mesh shell with a zipper and maybe a pocket. The other has pockets everywhere — chest, waist, inside, pen slots, a loop for a radio. That second one is a surveyor vest, and the difference is not cosmetic.

Surveyor vest vs standard safety vest

A standard hi-vis vest has one job: make you visible. A surveyor vest does that and carries your gear, which changes how it is built.

• Solid front, mesh back. The front panel is solid woven polyester because pockets need something to attach to. The back stays mesh so you do not cook in it.
• Zipper closure instead of hook-and-loop. Loaded pockets pull a vest open. A zipper holds.
• Reinforced stitching at stress points. Mic tabs, pocket corners, and shoulder seams take real load.
• Longer body. More surface for pockets, and it stays tucked when you bend.

The name comes from land surveyors, who needed somewhere to put a data collector, a radio, pens, and field notes. The design got adopted by everyone who carries tools on their chest: inspectors, foremen, utility crews, flaggers, and railway workers.

Does a surveyor vest still meet ANSI?

Yes — pockets do not disqualify a vest, as long as the reflective tape and background material meet the standard. Most surveyor vests are ANSI/ISEA 107 Type R Class 2.

Type R Class 2 is required for workers exposed to traffic moving faster than 25 mph and working against complex backgrounds. In practice that covers road work, survey crews, utility work, railway and metro crews, and emergency services. One thing worth checking on the spec sheet: which edition of the standard the vest is certified to. Both 107-2015 and 107-2020 are current on job sites, and some specs name a version explicitly.

How many pockets do you actually need?

More pockets is not automatically better. A vest with eleven pockets that you fill four of is just a heavier vest. Count what you carry before you buy.

Six pockets — the practical middle

Enough for a phone, pens, a notepad, and small hand tools without the bulk. A note on care

Retroreflective tape has a service life.
