How to Wash Hi-Vis Workwear Without Losing ANSI Reflectivity

High-visibility apparel only works if it stays visible — and the wrong wash routine can quietly strip the reflective tape and fade the fluorescent fabric that make ANSI-rated gear effective. If your crew wears the same hi-vis shirts, vests, and hoodies week after week, a few laundry habits make the difference between gear that holds its rating and gear that needs replacing every season.

Why Reflectivity Fades Faster Than You'd Think

ANSI/ISEA 107 reflective tape is bonded to the fabric, not woven into it. Heat, harsh detergent, and friction from a standard wash-and-dry cycle all work against that bond. Over time the tape can crack, dull, or peel — and once it does, the garment no longer meets its original ANSI class even if the fluorescent background color still looks bright.

Wash Rules That Protect the Rating

• Turn garments inside out before washing to reduce direct friction on the reflective tape.
• Use cold or warm water, never hot — heat is the fastest way to degrade reflective trim.
• Skip fabric softener. It leaves a film over the fluorescent fabric that dulls its daytime visibility.
• Avoid bleach, which yellows fluorescent orange and lime fabric and weakens reflective adhesive.
• Air dry when possible, or use low heat. High dryer heat is the single biggest cause of cracked reflective tape.
• Wash with like colors to avoid dye transfer onto fluorescent fabric.

How to Tell When It's Time to Replace, Not Rewash

Hold the garment under a light source at a distance. If the reflective tape looks patchy, cracked, or dull instead of a clean, even reflective band, it's no longer performing at its rated level — no amount of careful washing brings that back. At that point, replacing the garment isn't optional if your crew works near traffic or moving equipment under an ANSI Class 2 or Class 3 requirement.

Build a Rotation, Not a Single Set

The easiest way to protect your reflectivity investment is to stop relying on one shirt or vest worn daily.
